Northern Michigan Getaway

Ben has been wanting to get me up to northern Michigan to do some fishing. I found an Airbnb on Hanley Lake in Central Lake, Michigan to rent over Memorial Day weekend. We made our way up on Saturday morning and took a slight detour to go through Traverse City and see Grand Traverse Bay. Beautiful beachy town vibe. Got to our Airbnb about 2 pm and loaded the boat in to go for a ride. We did some fishing and caught tons of tiny perch in one area of the lake. We figured out that Hanley Lake is a chain of lakes connected. Much like at Waffle Farms. And you can even get to Torch through the whole connection. Just have to have the time and fuel lol. I had a few goals for the weekend, to catch our dinner for Sunday so it felt like a Canada experience, see an eagle and catch a fish out of Torch lake. We ordered a pizza from one of the few places to eat in town - Classic Pizza, and it was very good.  Picked up a few souvenirs in town also while we were there.
Sunday morning we got up and headed out on our lake again to try and catch our meal. It was slow at first. I know Ben was trying to get into some big fish. Unfortunately no walleye but we did get into the bluegills. They were bedding so we fished shallow. The highlight was when we realized two eagles and an immature eagle flew overhead. Landed in a tall pine near us and flew right over the top of our boat as we fished!  So cool!  We went back to our house with our fish and prepared dinner. Ben cleaned fish while I made cheesy rice and corn on the cob. Delicious!  Our plan was to go on an evening boat ride but while we were at Fudgees to get ice cream after dinner, the cashier guy suggested a sunset over Lake Michigan just a few miles down the road. Ben looked at me and said “let’s do that instead.”  Melted my heart. So we did that. And it was worth it.
Monday we had plans to go to Torch Lake all day. Definitely smart to get there earlier. The lake was so calm and you could see 50 ft down!  We saw sunken boats, fish boxes, and lots of sand. Not a lot of weeds. Many big drop off points. They say Torch can be 300 ft deep at points. Didn’t see many fish. But when we did, they were very big. We saw salmon, some smallmouth and rock bass. Speaking of, I ended up catching a big rock bass on red worm drop shot my second cast on Torch. But, sadly, was our one and only catch on Torch. We tried the few spots that the lake map suggested. Caught the rock bass just off where we put in on the north side. We got to see the famous huge sandbar also. Torch is mammoth. We went full speed and it took us about 40 miles to get from one end to the other. By the time we left the lake was pretty rough. Much better on the north end. Made it back to our Airbnb, cleaned up a bit and went back to Dockside restaurant on Torch lake. Outdoor, lakeside seating. Beautiful view. We could not have asked for better weather. In the 80s each day and sunny. Lows in the 50s. We lucked out. A great getaway with my honey.
