Good News

Aside from being able to watch the lady Irish beat California to go the "sweet 16" last night we got some awesome news from Trenton...
his buddy, Johnny recently became the head wrestling coach of Nazareth Academy in LaGrange Park, Illinois (just 20 minutes away from Naperville) and even had a state champ this past year.  According to Trenton, John had a nice talk with his supervisor about how they would love to build the wrestling program.  In order to do this, however, John suggested hiring assistant coaches and he gave them Trenton's name!  He said Trenton had the credentials with being on a team that had won state, had gone to individual state, has the passion for wrestling and refs quite often.  John's supervisor agreed and it is now in the works for Trenton to become the Assistant Coach for their wrestling team.  Trenton will be in charge of the 9th and 10th grade wrestlers.  How awesome to see Trenton's future unfolding and to see his goals come to light!!!!  So proud of him!  Please pray that Trenton formally gets the job...More info to come I am sure!!!

MRI Results

Trenton finally got his MRI results back yesterday and our prayers have definitely been answered.  No scarring or permanent damage was found.  The doctor did, however, have the results from his big test he took at his neuropsychologist and was told that he had been trying to get a hold of Trenton to discuss.  In short, his testing was not the best and he did score less than average when it came to memory and concentration issues.  The neuropsychologist is certain that it is result of so many concussions and would be considered post concussion issues.  Trenton is to continue his medication for his headaches and is to follow up with his neuropsychologist.  Please continue to pray for the best possible outcome.  Looking forward to having him and Tyler both home for the holidays for some R & R.

Post Concussion Awareness

Just as the new media guide comes out for North Central College Wrestling 2011-12 ... we get the news.  Trenton could possibly be done with wrestling for good.  From the start of the season...the practices have been pretty hard.  Trenton started complaining about headaches again.  Migraines.  This along with some memory loss, concentration issues and mood swings got me searching online about concussions again.  He was encouraged to go back to his neurologist about post concussion symptoms and he did so.  The neurologist in turn sent him to another doctor...a specialist in post concussion syptoms yesterday.  The doctor confirmed Trenton's fears.  The symptoms he has been having are indeed caused from his concussions.  In fact, the doctor went on to say (after doing some testing) that he felt Trenton indeed has some brain damage from so many of them in a row.  Dr. set up an MRI and gave Trenton some medication (migraine/seizure) and also wants him to see a neuropsychologist to talk about the memory loss and actual brain damage he may have.  Everything I have read is coming to light...these concussions that Trenton has suffered (four) may leave him with irreversible damage that he will have to live with forever and this scares me.
Many thoughts are going through my mind right now...some are of the fact he is done wrestling.  Mind you, his health is WAAAAY more important than any sport could be, but I know that he loves that sport and giving it up is going to be hard.  There have been times he eats, sleeps and breathes wrestling.  Trenton has certainly given us many AWESOME memories and we will cherish them forever.  The sad thing is that it has come with a cost.  A cost that means the most to any mom.  A child's health.  I wonder if we pushed him and if coaches pushed him to continue too soon after concussions and if this was the result and it sickens me.  How could anyone be so blind?  Concussions are a serious threat to young people in almost any sport and I am taking the time to educate myself better.
Check these places out...Headstrong and Save Your Brain, (The Concussion Blog as well and here for the main site)  just a few places I have started reading.  I also learned alot from this article and this article.  It seems that football has taken concussions seriously, but they are becoming more and more prevalent in wrestling as well.  In football you wear a helmet...you can't protect your head in wrestling.
So I ask for your prayers for Trenton as we go through this together.  That we find out the absolute root of all the problems he has been having and that it can be treated effectively and correctly.  And pray that he accepts that his actual physical wrestling is done.  That he will continue in his endeavors by teaching wrestling...he will be a GREAT coach and mentor someday soon, I just know it.  But letting go can be hard.

On Hold

So it has been some time since I posted about Trenton wrestling.  The reason...well, first came the ankle sprain which lasted quite longer than expected.  Trenton actually started back live wrestling about two weeks ago.  He has been going lightly on his ankle because the doctor had noticed that the sprain was actually in a strange area which was much harder to heal.  Unfortunately, time was something Trenton didn't have if he wanted to get back on the mat for the season.  On probably the third day of live wrestling I got a call from Trenton saying he had hit his head pretty hard against one of his teammates.  Trenton immediately had the dry heaves and was dizzy.  I asked him if he had told his coach and he said no and that he did not go to the trainer either.  Ben and I told him that he most definitely should let coach know and should see the trainer the next day.  Since this is the fourth time he has gotten a concussion we were very worried that the doctor would tell him that sports were not an option anymore, but Trenton's life means far more to us than any sport could.  He took our advice and told the trainer.  Doctor Bob made the appointment for yesterday afternoon.  The good news...Trenton is not done with sports.  The bad news...he is probably done for the season (since there is only a month left).  Trenton will have to take it easy and take some tests when his symptoms subside.  Even better news...he is already starting to feel better.  This was just a reminder, however, that even though we love to watch him wrestle, his well being is priceless to us.  That is all that matters.  Wrestling is just the icing on the cake, so to put.  So, this is why there has not been much posting about Trenton's wrestling at North Central.  He is absolutely still part of the team, just taking a bit of a break to get healthy.

Indiana Little Championships At Manchester

Ben was lucky enough to get off early on Friday afternoon, so Ben, his dad, and I headed to Manchester College to watch Trenton compete at the Indiana Little Championships around noon.  Wrestling started at 2pm so we made it there with time to spare.  We were shocked to see University of Indianapolis there, which meant Trenton's long time, good friend, Steven Sandefer, would be there.  And at Trenton's weight class to boot!  Lucky for them, they happened to be at the opposite sides of the bracket so if they were to meet up, it would be in the finals.  Unfortunately, Trenton only completed his first match.  He had a bye the first round and then had the third seed of the tournament (from Whitewater).  Can I just say how awesome it was to see him compete.  He did GREAT!  Ben describes him as a train in a way...he starts up strong and slow but ends up STRONGER and FASTER toward the end.  Very fast paced.  Ended up winning the match 11-4.  The second match was against a Calumet kid.  This college actually tried to recruit Trenton and we have known their coach, Leroy Vega, for quite some time.  Trenton was anxious to win this match.  He was stopped short.  Not because he lost, but because he ended up snapping his ankle, causing us to make a trip to the nearest Urgent Care in Huntington.  We were relieved it ended up being a sprain and not a break.  So, after a trip to Urgent Care, a couple of x-rays, a brace and crutches, we were on our way to the hotel where the team was staying to drop Trenton off for the evening.  Trenton was sad that we were unable to see more than one match, but I have to say, the one match was worth it.  His fire and energy for wrestling is still there and it shows.  He is still getting better and better everytime I watch him.  North Central had three wrestlers win the tournament, which is a great honor.  Even though Trenton was stopped short, it was sure awesome to see him compete.  Looking forward to seeing him again really soon.  As for the sprain...ice, aspirin, rest and should be good to go within a few weeks.  Let's hope for the best.

Trenton's First Tourney

Trenton had his first tournament today at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois.  I felt awful because we couldn't go but it was just over 4 hours away from home.  He promised to call and/or text everytime he wrestled and he was good on his word.  He went 149 lbs. today and went 3-2.  Said he felt like the hard work payed off so that made me feel good.  His good friends, Jessie and Tarrah, are both mat maids now so I texted Jessie to ask if she would send me a picture of Trenton because I missed his wrestling so much.  She did :)  Thank you Jessie!  So proud of Trenton.  I know he knows that we are rooting from afar but it just is not the same as actually being there.  Love him and hope he is doing well!  Got my pink "Fear the Bird" shirt on in support of him.  Go Cardinals and Go Trenton!

A New Season of College Wrestling

Let the season begin...Trenton has been conditioning since he started back to school in September and has been in full season practice for a few weeks now.  Last week he called and told us he was going to be applying at Pet Supplies Plus in Naperville for some extra cash since he has no classes on Tuesday and Thursdays.  Well, he started Tuesday!  So proud of him for stepping up.  Sounds like he is extremely busy between classes, practices and work now.  He begins his season this Saturday, which we will be unable to go to since it is just over 4 hours away (Concordia).  This makes me sad.  It is just really hard for me because we have been so involved in our boys' athletics and activities since they were small.  Last year we were able to go and support Trenton more than what we thought after Tyler was injured at the beginning of his wrestling season.  I know Trenton is aware that this is Tyler's senior year and he wants us to go and support Tyler this last year, but believe me, we will be supporting Trenton EVERY chance we get.  He has promised to call after everytime he wrestles to update us on how he does and he holds true to his word.  That I am glad for.  Not being there to watch in person does not lighten my nervousness about him wrestling one bit.  I am on edge until I hear from Trenton...it's the kind of person I am and I wouldn't change that for the world.  Feeling every emotion my boys feel and more...living in the moment.  It's what it is all about.  My boy will be wrestling 149 lbs. this year and hoping for a great season.  I know his practices have been tough and he has been going hard but it will pay off.  It will.  Below is Trenton's schedule for the season...and you gotta love his beard he has going on :)

Open Practice

Made a trip to North Central this morning with the family and LOVED it!!  Chad/Amber and family were able to come, along with my parents, Ben's dad and his brother.  Tyler and Gabi were able to come too.  We were able to watch Trenton's open practice and visit with him for the day.  It was good to see him back on the mat!  It's been a rough couple of weeks for him being sick (bronchitis and a sinus infection), but with meds and rest, he is bouncing back nicely.  We can see how hard he has been working and looking forward to his wrestling season!  We were supposed to tailgate with the wrestlers but unfortunately, the weather had other plans.  We checked out the new Res Rec building because we had not been able to see inside it last year and dropped off goodies we got for Trenton at his dorm and headed to lunch.  Because of the girls and Trenton being sick recently, we opted out of being outside and headed to Old Country Buffet in Naperville.  While there, the rain decided to stop so we decided to go to the football game, considering it was against Illinois Wesleyan (who upset the Cardinals last year) and would prove to be a pretty good game.  Chad/Amber decided against going to the game since the girls were tired and probably would not sit well at a game at this point in the day and my mom had a headache so they started home.  Ben's dad and brother went to the game for a while with us while we visited and watched.  It was a good time.  North Central pulled out the win 30-7 so we were able to leave after the third quarter.  We dropped Trenton off at his dorm and said our goodbyes.  Always sad to leave him...but it was a nice visit :)

Takin' Down Cancer!

Trenton called today and shared the news that their team will be working hard to raise cancer awareness and also raise some money for cancer research as well.  Their "Fear the Bird" shirts are supposedly going to be pink this year with "Takin' Down Cancer" on the back.  Trenton also said that the wrestlers were to choose a color to represent a cancer and they would order that color of shoe laces to be worn that season.  Trenton chose dark blue for colon cancer.  He seems to be doing well.  A little worn out from some pretty tough practices and fighting off kind of bug, possibly a sinus infection.  Prayers for my boy to stay well and stay focused.  Looking forward to a visit with him in the next couple of weeks.  Go Cardinals!

It has begun

...wrestling season for Trenton, that is. And he chose these (Asics Agressors - replacing the Roulans) shoes before leaving. And he is excited to be getting them any day in the mail since they just came out on the 15th of this month...can I just say I am excited to see him back on the mat also????? It feels like it has been forever. Trenton is planning on going 149 lbs again this year, but we definitely know how planning goes...or shall we say, it never goes as planned??? Preseason is in full swing though and Trenton is glad to be back where he loves to be.

Trenton's Wrestling Banquet 2010

Took a trip to Naperville today for Trenton's wrestling banquet. I thought it was really nice...complete with grilled chicken sandwich or hamburger, pasta salad, french fries, brownies and all the fixins. Showed a slideshow for the year and added lots of personable touches...one being a time when any of the wrestlers could get up and share "Remember When's" - these were funny! One of the boys shared a story about Trenton's first varsity wrestling match, him being so excited and nervous that he forgot his wrestling shoes!! We actually had to bring Tyler's for him to borrow that time!!! lol Trenton received Academic All Conference (over a 3.3 gpa during wrestling season) and his varsity letter (starting 5 or more times for the team). It didn't stop there, however, Trenton received the Coach's Appreciation Award (shared with Zobac) for just being where the team needed him whenever they needed weight wise, etc. and never complaining about it. It was a nice honor. And then to complete his awards, Trenton and Jake got one of the "cutest couple" awards. This was more of a jokester award for a few of the guys who stayed with the same workout partner all year. It was funny. Had a good time listening to the Seniors' speeches and talking with some of Trenton's teammates and coaches. It was a good year and I know he is looking forward to next year. His arm looked sore...all wrapped up ready to be looked at tomorrow morning by an orthopedist. Pray for good news. So proud of you today, Trenton. Keep up the good work.

Not a bad finish!

In the Brute-Adidas National Wrestling Coaches Association NCAA Division III rankings for the 2009-10 season, the North Central Cardinals finished 8th. Not bad, considering they were ranked 10 on February 9th. A great season for them, in fact, they sent 4 of their wrestlers (Fitzenreider, Starzyck, Brown, and Yeoul) to the Division III Nationals today in Iowa. Trenton, along with alot of the other wrestlers, went to support them. You can follow them at ncaa.com. Wishing them all the best!! Trenton's record ended up being 11-14. Not bad for a freshman. Very proud of him and very proud of the team!!!

CCIW Championship

Trenton called us on Wednesday evening and told us he was kind of stressing. Coach called him and told him he was going to wrestle in the CCIW Championships the next evening at 149 lbs. Well Trenton thought his next tournament he would be wrestling in would be on the 27th (B Team Championships) so he kind of let his weight get the better of him. He had to lose and in a hurry. Ben immediately made plans to go watch. With Gabi having basketball practice I stayed here with her and Tyler hoping to catch the final round on the internet (the computers crashed and they were never able to get it up). Ben called his dad/brother to see if they wanted to ride along and David was up for the challenge. I ran to the store to get odds and ends for Trenton that he may have needed and made him some heart cutout cookies for Valentines day, boxed it up and got all the camera equipment together before Ben left around 3:30pm or so. Ben called when he got there to inform me that Trenton was seeded 2nd and would wrestle twice (4 teams there altogether in their conference - Augustana, Elmhurst, North Central and Wheaton). Ben also said Trenton's knee was looking pretty sore and he had been having daily ultrasound to try and bust up a calcium deposit inside. He said it looked painful and Ben also shared that Trenton was throwing up a bit, not feeling the best. I was a bit worried. First up, Tyler Hernandez from Augustana. Trenton teched him 22-4. Next round would be for 1st place against Charlie Curran from Elmhurst. This would be a tough one considering his record was 23-3 and we watched Trenton wrestled him when we traveled to Elmhurst on the weeknight not too long ago. The guy is big and a good wrestler. Trenton ended up with 2nd place losing to Curran 2-14. I know the coaches were ecstatic for Trenton because he stepped it up and helped the team win the CCIW Championship for the 3rd year in a row, beating Elmhurst by only 5 points! And to top it off, Coach Kevin Bratland was named Coach of the Year! I know Trenton was glad that Ben and Dave made it to watch and support. Congrats to Trenton, North Central Wrestling team and Coach Bratland! Check out the article on the meet here!

ICE Game #4

Just got home from watching Gabi's 4th basketball game at ICE and she did AWESOME today! She is learning so much and has come so far already. We are very proud of her! Unfortunately, her team was beat today 19-29 but I can tell you, what an improvement. From what I have seen thus far, out of the four teams competing, the one we played today seemed to be the best. So, we will see how things progress. Unfortunately, next weekend Gabi is in a wedding and the following weekend is Individual Wrestling State that we plan to go to. I believe there is only one more game after that so I am glad that she did so well today. Gabi had 6 points out of the 19 they scored. She made 1 basket for 2 points and 4 free throws (out of 6) which means she was fouled three times. Ben and I laughed so hard when the game was over and she said to me and Ben, "I overexaggerated like Luke Harangody (her fav ND player) does to get more points!" And we were most impressed with how aggressive she was! The coach even said they learned a few plays but told Gabi just to go as fast as she could, that they couldn't stop her. Check out the videos below to see how quick she is as point guard. And the one where she makes 2 for 2 free throws. I have to chuckle watching Gabi run into her own team mate when she is done though. She has truly come a long way and is really enjoying basketball. I think Gabi is most excited that she is involved in a sport and loves the fact that we are supporting her now like we have been supporting the boys in wrestling and football. So very proud of my girl!

Rooting for Trenton from afar today as he is in Wisconsin at a wrestling tournament. Since he has weighed in at 149 lbs. he was unable to wrestle 141 lbs. this week and he feels like he pays for that. Because he gives up so much weight and if you see some of the guys wrestling 149 lbs. you would see exactly what I mean. He was very discouraged to tell us that he went 2 and out today. We had to reiterate to him that he is back to the bottom of the food chain again...a freshman. The experience truly does help. We told him to hang in there and continue to work hard but I think it fell on deaf ears. With the combination of his losses, not feeling well and his knee blowing up again, he just was ready to give up today. It makes me feel bad because I think he does better when we are with him to watch. I just wish I could be in several different places at one time and at the blink of an eye, but I can't and it's tough for me to digest. But, needless to say, we are always proud of Trenton and how hard he works. That stubborness is part of who he is. And as for Mishawaka...our team is advancing 13 out of 14 wrestlers to semi state. Tyler went to support his team and help coach Darius (his replacement at 145 lbs). So proud of all of them, but especially my own three children today.

Home Turf

Yesterday was a special day...a good day. Tyler headed to Sectionals here at home, while my parents took Gabi to her basketball game. I am happy to report that her team score was only 4-8 and they played the first team they played again (since there are only 4 teams all together). This is a GREAT indicator that our girls are only getting better! From what I heard Gabi did great. She almost made a shot and was so proud! A HUGE thank you to my parents for keeping her for the day and getting her off to her basketball game!! Ben and I headed to North Central with David to watch Trenton wrestle at B Team Brawls. I was also excited to know it would be held in the original wrestling room. Alot of history there...and first time we have seen Trenton wrestle in there! Trenton thought he would be going with the varsity because of some injuries on the team but at the last minute the coach asked him to stay back and wrestle at the Brawls. He went 149 lbs. again. His last words after the tournament, "man, this was an awful lot of work for a B Team Brawl!" and he earned his 3rd place spot from the wrestling indeed! Not only was Trenton giving up quite a bit of weight but there were 11 wrestlers in his bracket. What made the day even more special was the fact that he asked his dad to "be in his corner" and coach him. I will never forget Ben's reaction after Trenton asked him. Ben turned to me and said, "he asked me to coach him since alot of the coaches are gone today, he must really mean it if he asked me, huh??" and as you can imagine, a HUGE grin from ear to ear. Ben was very excited. It brought back lots of memories for him and this was something he will never forget. Trenton was actually seeded 3rd at this tournament and faced a Manchester kid (Adam Ulner)first beating him 7-0. His wrestling was great and Trenton said he was going to work on his riding time. I think he got it for just about every match too. Next up, a Knox kid (DuGan O'Connor) that he beat 4-0. The next round was against the #1 seeded wrestler from Ohio Northern (Nick Hoopes). This wrestler was good, in fact, Ohio Northern is a Division 2 school. Trenton went into third OT with the score 1-1 when the Ohio Northern wrestler ended up riding him out thus winning 2-1. A heartbreaker, but a very good match. Trenton wrestled excellent. I have to admit I was a bit worried he would exit the tournament mentally after this loss but he didn't. He had to face a Whitewater Wisconsin wrestler (Adam Spatahek) to see which would be wrestling for 3rd place. Another good match and Trenton came on strong beating him 8-3. Trenton's last match was against Wabash (Garrett Payne) for third place winning over him 7-4! We were so proud of him and Ben was all smiles all day. We ended our day by taking Trenton out to Chili's for some steak and shrimp. It was a good evening with Dave, Ben and Trenton. Good wrestling, good pics, good meal and good times...couldn't ask for more. And SOOO SOOO proud of how Trenton is wrestling and how he is doing so well in school. He has adjusted very well to having wrestling and homework. Very proud. And I was excited to have captured a pic of Trenton sleeping on the mat while some matches were going on...it was actually of his headgear...his maroon and white ones. Just a subtle reminder of where he came from and loved...Mishawaka! Loved it.
