Resolutions

Yes, it is that time again...every year I make a list of resolutions and only 50% of the time I actually follow through...why is that? I would have to say because I am like most people and make huge resolutions that aren't attainable. This year I thought about it...I will make resolutions I CAN uphold. I will make easy resolutions, ones that will make me feel better about myself and my family - that I will actually enjoy. I read somewhere once that you have to repeat something 45-60 times before it becomes a habit. That's not too bad...a month and a half. So, here it goes...
1. Start running again...I used to run 9 miles a week! I got so good it would only take me 30 minutes to run 3 miles...I'd love to get started on that regimen again. I felt better and had more energy through the day. I have decided to get some new Sauconys (my old ones have hit the dust) and go for it!
2. Tell Ben and the kids everyday that I love them. I know, you're thinking, don't you do that already, that's so easy...well, it's not. With everyone going in all different directions and life moving at an extraordinary pace, it is something that easily gets put on the backburner. I will work hard to do it everyday this year.
3. Read more in the Bible. I love those Our Daily Bread magazines you pick up at church. It makes devotions simple. It doesn't take alot of your time but it is a meaningful opportunity between you and God. I am looking forward to starting again.
These three things I think will help my body, mind, and spirit and keep me in tune with the coming year - Simple things that I CAN DO and I won't falter. Simple is the key...Welcome 2007!

2006 - Auld Lang Syne

So what does "Auld Lang Syne" mean? If you are anything like me you sing it year after year but really don't know the meaning...I decided to research - The Scottish saying means "for times gone by." So here is my tribute to Auld Lang Syne - particularly this past year. Also some pictures that we just can't leave out...a great time to remember and look back at our last year.

Trenton turned 15 in January. Trenton was also able to attend Michigan's Wrestling Camp with some friends. Over the summer he took driver's training at Premier Driving Institute - where my brother works! He had an awesome time there with Chad and the other instructors. You couldn't ask for a better driver's training class! It was an enjoyable training for Trenton. Trenton will be able to get his license in February (you have to be 16, 1 month and 1 day). Over the summer Trenton also worked as a Camp Counselor at our church's Prairie Camp and this was his second year. He loves it. Trenton also attended the Teen Camp they had in August where he had a great time! Trenton started the 10th grade and began wrestling at school in September (training and conditioning). His season opened in December. It's been a slow get go for him this year but we think he is warming up.

Tyler started the year in January in full swing of middle school wrestling (7th grade). He went 33-0 this year and was the Big 11 Individual Champion! Over the summer Tyler was also able to attend Michigan's Wrestling Camp with some friends and also went to Canada with Ben and his family (Ben's dad, Ben's aunt, uncle and cousin). This was Tyler's first year in Canada and he had a blast! Tyler started the 8th grade in August and turned 14 in September. He also played cornerback for the middle school's football team-they finished as Big 11 Conference Runner Up as a team.

Gabi has been taking gymnastics on and off all year. She started the year taking them at Fun N Fitness where she enjoyed being with her friend, Emma. It gave them a chance to see each other more often. I helped out with her kindergarten class last year in a segment called "Artsmart" where the kids learned about art and actually got to try imitating some of the artist's work. In March her school had a big Artsmart Gala where the whole school's art was displayed. I was in charge (with another mom) of getting our class' artwork on the wall on some kind of display. Gabi really enjoyed having me there to help out in her class. Gabi also turned 6 years old in March. Over the summer she continued gymnastics on and off but in October we switched her over to ICE (Indiana Cheer Elite) and she really excelled! Gabi can do a roundoff, a handstand, cartwheel, somersault and a back handspring (on the trampoline) all by herself! We will definitely be going back on the wrestling off seasons. She is excited to go back. Gabi started the first grade in August and is loving the all day routine! I am helping out in her class a couple times a month also. She has lost her two bottom teeth this year so far!

Ben is still at Days working as the Warehouse Manager. He went to Canada with his dad, his uncle, his aunt and Tyler in July - a trip they really enjoy. This was his third time to Flindt Landing, Canada. Ben also helped out with Tyler's football team and wrestling team and again, is helping out with Trenton's wrestling team this year as well. He is looking forward to helping out with Tyler's team as well. This is definitely something he enjoys!

I am still the Director of a food program for licensed daycare homes. We reimburse them for nutritious meals they serve their children. I have one employee who does the monitoring (visits the homes) for me which enables me to be at home. I also help out with Gabi's class (a couple times a month). For Tyler's wrestling team last year I organized the food for tournaments (with another mom) and I also had a great time organizing the Football Banquet for his team this year as well. This year I also started (with another mom) the Wrestling Parent Club for Trenton's school and we have been able to supply food for the wrestlers at the high school level and come together as a unit. It is something I have been wanting to do since his school puts such high emphasis on the football team (sometimes too much so). I was excited to do this...it's alot of work but I am enjoying it. It enables me to really be a part of something Trenton and Tyler like to do.

Our family as a whole had a GREAT year...one with many travels-the two best places in the world (Florida and North Carolina). In June we took our family vacation to Florida where we traveled from one side of the state to the other. We started on Daytona Beach where Ben was able to drive around the NASCAR track (his father's day gift). The kids did some body surfing and enjoyed staying on the ocean. We also saw the lighthouse there and it was absolutely beautiful! From there we went to Orlando - to Discovery Cove. The boys especially loved it because it was an all inclusive resort...they fed us and took care of us like royalty. The highlight was swimming with dolphins and stingrays! The following day we went to Busch Gardens since we got that free ticket (from Discovery Cove). Since we are big fans of Cedar Point...it's almost like nothing compares...but we had a good time anyways. Our last part of our vacation was going to Crystal River where we got to swim with manatees in the wild! What an experience. Gabi has absolutely loved manatees since she was about 2 (she got a book and they grew on her). We took her a couple of years ago to Sea World where she saw manatees and her love just escalated even more. This is what made swimming with them such a magical experience. What was neat, is that Trenton developed a love for these animals as well. We all agreed that swimming with the manatees had to be the absolute best part of our vacation and vowed to do it again! Definitely worth it! This of course, was a vacation of a lifetime and we really took it all in!

Over the summer we were able to go camping a few times - though it seems to get less and less each year with the busyness of the kids and their to dos and them getting older. We did get to go with my brother and my parents which really took us back to the old days. It was a good experience. We also did some traveling for Indiana State Wrestling Association (ISWA) -a wrestling club- where the boys wrestled folkstyle and freestyle - both of them placing at State Competitions!

Our last trip was to Mars Hill, North Carolina over fall break in October. What a beautiful place that time of year. We were able to see Ben's grandparents, his aunt and lots of extended family. We were able to take some wonderful pictures and just really enjoyed the visiting aspect of going this time. It is a place we look forward to going again and a place where we know his roots exist.

So anyways, here's to the year 2006 - saying goodbye and keeping the memories but looking forward to an even better 2007! Happy New Year!

Al Smith Invitational

Yesterday we spent the entire day (from 9 am to 7 pm) at Mishawaka High School for the annual Al Smith Invitational wrestling tournament. It is the biggest and best tournament in our area with a total of 33 teams! This was Trenton's first year wrestling in it and it was with great honor. Unfortunately, with being sick (strep throat lingering and running a temp) and a hurt shoulder, Trenton was just not up to par. He lost two matches so he will not be wrestling today - yep, that's right...the tournament continues today! His school does have 5 of their wrestlers still in the competition and we wish them well. Here are a couple photos from yesterday's tournament (Trenton is in black).

Santa followed by the Tooth Fairy

Gabi finally lost her second tooth. It was so loose and ready to come out, the permanent one under it had actually come up behind it before the baby one came out! She just didn't want to get rid of it I guess! She lost her first one at Jellystone while camping in August so she didn't have her cool little Tooth Fairy Pillow that "maw maw" and "paw paw" got for her last Christmas! She was able to use it this time and she got $2.00 for it - I told her the Tooth Fairy has gotten quite generous over the years!

Christmas Photos

I have posted lots of pictures from December and Christmas on Our Family Website to check out...Please let us know what you think by leaving a Comment there or here on our blog! Thanks - Merry Christmas from our house to yours!

Happy Holidays!

We made it! We had a great Christmas! We opened our "special gifts" on Christmas Eve day. I got a new kitchen carousel (with all kinds of utensils, etc. on it) from Trenton, Trenton got some new Nike socks for wrestling along with some Nike warm up pants from Ben, Ben got some new slippers and a booklight from Cindy, Tyler got a new holster for his cell phone and Tommy Boy DVD from Gabi, and Gabi got a new CD "boombox" from Tyler. The letters were the best though...very personal and thoughtful from everyone. In the afternoon we visited mom R's grave...left a candle burning toward evening so it would last overnight in her memory-a thoughtful time. We spent Christmas Eve with my mom's side of the family at my parents' house. Great food and lots of laughter! Euchre tournament and lots of reminiscing. Congrats to Billy (my cousin) and his new fiance also!Christmas Day we opened our gifts here and enjoyed Santa's gifts. We also went to Chad and Amber's house for brunch. We had fun opening gifts and visiting with them as well. We would later return in the evening for some "cur rum" as Trenton calls it (Carrom). The boys really took to that game...and old game made new I guess. We also played some Cranium and Taboo. Lots of laughter there as well. In the afternoon though, we visited dad R, Dave, Pam, Jeff and Bren. It was good to see them and visit. We exchanged gifts there as well. It was certainly a busy day but we enjoyed it thoroughly! I may post lots of pictures on my family web page for everyone to enjoy but will let you know when they are up.

Christmas Itinerary

I told you I have some cooking to do (in my posting below). Christmas Eve day we will attend our church service, open our special gifts and I will be taking Hash Brown Casserole to my mom's for Christmas Eve. My mom has her side of the family over every Christmas Eve to eat some great food! Meatballs, shrimp, wings, hash brown casserole, cookies, chips and dip, mac & cheese, and that's just naming a few! We also play cards, watch some tv, talk, laugh, reminisce, take pics by the Christmas tree and just enjoy each other's company. It's a great time that my children have also come to love as a tradition of mine when I was young. We'll come home, get pjs on, read our books and get some shut eye.

On Christmas morning, we'll listen to the Christmas story out of the Bible, open our gifts here and go to Chad's house for brunch...I'm taking Hash Brown Casserole again and some fruit. We'll open gifts there also. From there we'll probably go to Ben's dad's house to exchange gifts with Dad R, Dave, Pam, Jeff and Bren.

By the evening time we are beat but loving all the moments we shared with our family...we are so looking forward to this weekend! From our house to yours...MERRY CHRISTMAS!

More Christmas Traditions

Not much left to do...I think Tyler and Ben still need to write their "special letter" to go with their "special gift," but other than that and some cooking, etc., the shopping and wrapping is done. We will open our "special gifts" on Christmas Eve day (tomorrow!!). In case you missed my blog on that one...around Oct/Nov our we draw names. This year Tyler got Gabi, Gabi got Tyler, I got Ben, Trenton got me, and Ben got Trenton. I have taught the kids to listen to one another through the year for something "special" they could use or would want-to really use some thought into this gift...take the time to watch and listen each one of our family and then when we draw names we will know what to get our "special" person this year. Along with the gift we write a short note talking about how that person impacted us this year and how they are special to us. This is a tradition we have carried on for quite some time...I think maybe 6 years now. Lots of love and laughter and tears all at the same time. It's a good time for our family.

I was also reminded by my sister in law (Pam) of a tradition that was carried on into our family from Ben's family while he was young. Before opening gifts on Christmas morning Ben will read the Christmas story from the Bible to remind us of the ultimate gift - Jesus. It is a good reminder of what is really important...If you are interested here are the verses...Matthew 1:18-25 and Luke 2:1-14. Happy Birthday Jesus!

Fondue

One of my and Ben's favorite places to eat, especially while we were dating, is Fondue in the 100 Center in downtown Mishawaka. In fact, that was Ben's first place of employment! Although it is quite expensive it has got to be the best environment to just relax and enjoy each other's company. It can sometimes take a couple hours to eat there! Anyways, three years ago when Trenton was 12, Tyler was 11, and Gabi was only 3, we decided to venture there and include them in our love of fondue. They loved it too! It has now become one of the things we look forward to once a year and we try to make it around Christmas time because the restaurant is decorated so beautiful. It just so happened that Trenton did not have practice this evening (he has it tomorrow morning) and he doesn't have to worry about cutting so much weight so we decided to go out tonight. It was once again an enjoyable evening.

Traditions...Books On Christmas Eve

Our family has a few traditions we started when Trenton was very little. One of them is reading The Night Before Christmas by Clement Clark Moore on Christmas Eve (after the family party at my mom's house). We always get our pjs on, get the cookies and milk for Santa and cozy up together to read this book.
Just recently, when Gabi was about 2, we decided to add a book on Christmas Eve, A Special Place For Santa by Jeanne Pieper. What a special book! And did you know that even though the boys are 15 and 14, they still like to sit with Gabi to hear these stories! I think they enjoy being "taken back" to when they were her age and back to the Christmas excitement and magic of it all. I just love traditions we create as a family!

Best Friends

Tonight we were able to get together with my good friend from high school and her daughter and son (Lina, Emma and Joey) that practically grew up with Gabi at my mom's daycare home. We have made it "tradition" as Emma calls it, to have the girls exchange small gifts for Christmas. We met at McDonalds for dinner and unknowingly to the girls, they ended up getting the same things!!! They each got a gift card to McDonalds, a gift card to the movies and a karaoke CD of High School Musical! They were both so excited as you can tell from the pictures! It was definitely a fun time! Merry Christmas Emma, Joey and Gabi!

Shopping, shopping, shopping

We got alot of shopping done today. We weren't sure how Tyler would feel this morning because he had a stomach bug last night but apparently, whatever it was, is gone now. We decided to break up into two (me, Tyler, Gabi and Trenton, Ben) and finish out the shopping since the boys are hard to take because of school and sports. Well, we got their shopping done. I have to take one thing back to exchange a size and pick up two more gifts and I am also completely finished! What a relief. It will be so nice to just enjoy the rest of the week before Christmas! Tonight we will enjoy the lights on the tree, Christmas presents wrapped and layed under it, perhaps a fire in the fireplace, some hot cocoa and the finale of Survivor! It will be nice to enjoy some R & R...
oh, and I changed some settings on the Comments section so please leave us a note...we'd love to hear from you!

Tribune Buzz

We were excited that Trenton made the local paper today...let's just say I guess we are not the only ones glad he decided to bump up a weight class. Check out what the local paper had to say:

"A lineup switch paid dividends for the Kingsmen, as Chris Tanner has dropped to the 112-pound weight class, while Trent Reinoehl moves up to 119. Reinoehl obviously likes his new weight, as he went 5-0 on the day to claim the 119 championship."

Undefeated

We just got back from Trenton's tournament today at his school. He has decided to go 119 lbs. instead of 112 lbs. The cutting weight was causing way too much stress, not to mention starting to do damage to his body. He was back today for the varsity team in full swing, in great health and went undefeated! He won 4 matches and had 1 forfeit! My parents, Ben's dad and his brother were all there to watch him.
We couldn't have been more proud today! Great job Trenton!

Finished!

Yes, we are finally finished with our Christmas cookies! Gabi and I worked hard this afternoon on the cutout cookies. She had so much fun singing along to the Christmas music and deciding which cookie cutter she wanted to use. When asked what the favorite part of making the cookies was, Gabi replied, "eating the dough!"

Almost Done Baking...

Well, I am almost finished. Christmas music in the background, the warm sunshine coming through the windows and spending the evening making cookies with Gabi made it a great day!

Gabi delivered the bread to our neighbors and the cookies are just about complete - Cutouts are the only ones left to do!

Still Baking...

Yes, I am still baking cookies...I didn't get started as soon as I wanted to yesterday but I am working on it today. I decided to bake apple bread for the neighbors this year...I am late on that one too, but late is better than never. Anyways, the house smells WONDERFUL...in the meantime, here is our Christmas card this year. I have been asked by a few people where Maizy is in the picture since we usually include her...we decided not to this year, but now we feel bad. We were kind of in a hurry to get the picture done and it takes more than a few times with Maizy in the picture...this one only took one time! Anyways, we'll include her next year. Maizy is still with us and she is still the biggest baby of the family.

Cookies

Can you believe there are only 12 days to Christmas? I cannot believe the time has gone by so quickly! This year has been terrible for me as far as baking cookies. I usually have my cookies done and in the freezer by Thanksgiving. Yes, that's right, I freeze them - it is so much less stressful to have to take them out of the freezer to unthaw then have to worry about making cookies when it gets so close to Christmas. This year was certainly a reminder since I don't even have them made yet. At least I have most of the Christmas shopping done, I still have a few things here and there, but other than that, it is done. That's a good thing. As for the baking, I will be going to the store today to get some ingredients to make some cookies. Since it is so late in the game, I just won't make as many different kinds...focus on the ones we really like instead. The kids always enjoy the cutouts, thumbprint cookies, and of course, the peanut butter with hershey kisses on top! That sounds like a good bunch - easy too! I will also be trying a different recipe for the "thumbprint cookies." It looks wonderful! I'll let you know how they turn out. Until then...finish up work in the office, off to the store, make calls for food for the tournament on Saturday, get started on those cookies, get dinner layed out, and off to a wrestling meet. 12 Days and counting...

Early Christmas Celebrations

Yesterday we celebrated the Reinoehl Family Christmas at our church. It was nice to see everyone there and the food was amazing, as always! I made my mother in law's famous Hash Brown Casserole and of course, it went over really well. The kids had a wonderful time running around and burning off some energy. Gabi played football with all of her cousins...the funny thing is it was two girls (her and Allison) against like 6 boys. They were kicking some butt! Here are some photos of the party...
Also, Christmas came a little early to Trenton and Tyler. Uncle Chad has been influencing the boys to get online to play Sokom 4 - well, "Maw maw" and "Paw paw" made it happen. After hooking everything up (which took most of the weekend), the boys finally were able to get online to play with Uncle Chad (aka The Flea) and some of his buddies. Trenton and Tyler are loving it! Thanks "maw maw" and "paw paw"!

Big Rivalries

Big rivalry last night...Penn vs. Mishawaka. Trenton had to wrestle last year's state champ at 103 lbs. This year he is at 112 lbs. with Trenton. We were very proud of how Trenton did! He lost 9-4 but did a great job...we were a little worried about his performance considering he has been cutting some weight and has been sick lately. Although our team lost as a whole, Trenton did very well and we could not have been more proud. Wrestling season off to a good start...
